Understanding perfume
Can perfume notes predict the smell
Perfume notes can suggest a direction, but they cannot fully predict the finished smell. Balance, materials and the surrounding composition can make two perfumes with similar lists feel different.
A HUME Fragrance buying guide

Use notes to form questions
A listed citrus opening or woody base tells you something worth investigating. It does not reveal the exact formula, intensity or how dominant that effect will be.
Avoid counting shared notes as a match
Two fragrances may list several ingredients or impressions in common and still emphasize different qualities. A short shared list is not proof of a dupe or identical experience.
Verify the overall impression
Sample the candidate and describe it before checking the list again. This helps distinguish what you actually perceived from what you expected to find.
Try this before you buy
Predict three qualities from a note list, then compare those predictions with a sample without forcing a match.
