Choosing a note
How to choose a patchouli fragrance
Choose patchouli fragrance around the complete balance of earthiness, warmth and supporting notes. A patchouli listing can appear in floral, aromatic or other structures, so one familiar stereotype should not determine the whole search.
A HUME Fragrance buying guide

Start from a direction you know
If you already like floral or citrus descriptions, explore a patchouli-containing candidate in that context. Familiar support can make the comparison easier to understand.
Observe the later impression
Record whether you perceive earthy depth, warmth or something else. Not isolating patchouli does not mean the sample was uninformative.
Use dislikes constructively
If a candidate feels too dense or sweet, identify that quality. Another perfume with patchouli may balance it differently, so do not judge only by shared note names.
Try this before you buy
Describe the whole fragrance first, then note whether the patchouli listing helps explain its later character.
