Understanding perfume
Woody vs spicy perfume
Woody perfumes emphasize impressions associated with woods, while spicy perfumes emphasize effects reminiscent of spices. The two often overlap: woods can support a spicy structure and spice can add contrast to a woody perfume.
A HUME Fragrance buying guide

Recognize a woody direction
Descriptions may suggest dry timber, smooth wood or earthy depth. Cedar, sandalwood and vetiver point toward different possibilities rather than one uniform woody smell.
Recognize a spicy direction
Pepper, cardamom or cinnamon suggest different kinds of lift or warmth. A spice note is a clue to the impression, not proof that the product contains a kitchen ingredient.
Compare emphasis rather than presence
A perfume with both wood and spice notes may emphasize either or neither in your perception. Test the overall balance and whether you like it through the wear.
Try this before you buy
Describe one candidate using texture words and another using spice references, then note where they overlap.
